15th Annual

Journalists from a variety of media and all six New England states will attend local workshops, view online lessons and receive in-person instruction at Boston University. They will learn the latest investigative and database reporting techniques and public records access skills. The fellows chosen for this 15th annual Negri Institute will reflect today’s diverse news media and come from daily and weekly newspapers, television and radio stations and online publications. Learn more about previous institutes here.

This year’s institute is made possible by the generosity of the Estate of Gloria L. Negri, Boston University, the Academy of New England Journalists and the Rhode Island Foundation. We would also like to thank the following Leadership Circle donors and Major Supporters for their contributions: The Boston Globe, Paul and Ann Sagan, The Robertson Foundation, Hearst Connecticut Media Group and WCVB-Boston.

Locations

In addition to local freedom of information law workshops in early October, the Institute will be at Boston University and Hotel Commonwealth from Oct. 24 to Oct. 26. NEFAC will provide parking only at the Warren Towers garage, 700 Commonwealth Avenue. If parking is needed, please email justin@nefac.org by Oct. 15.

Keynote Speakers

Frank Koughan | FRONTLINE

Koughan is a journalist, writer and filmmaker who first worked for FRONTLINE in 1992 as an associate producer on the award-winning In Our Children’s Food. He went on to co-produce Is This Any Way To Run a Government? (1994) and the Emmy-winning High Stakes in Cyberspace (1995).

Geeta Anand | VTDigger

Anand is editor-in-chief of VTDigger and former reporter for The Boston Globe. A Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist, author and former university dean, Anand’s career includes nearly 30 years of investigative and public service journalism. Before joining VTDigger, she served as dean of the University of California Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism and worked as a foreign correspondent for The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, reporting from India on a range of international issues. Anand began her career in Vermont, covering southern Vermont and Rutland for The Rutland Herald, where her reporting on credit reporting errors led to congressional action. She later covered City Hall for The Boston Globe and is the author of “The Cure,” a book about a family’s search for medical answers that was adapted into the film “Extraordinary Measures,” starring Harrison Ford. Anand’s commitment to rigorous, community-focused journalism has shaped her career, from small-town reporting to global stories.
